Do I Need Root Canal Treatment?

You may need a root canal if the inner tissue of your tooth, known as the pulp, becomes inflamed or infected due to deep decay or severe physical trauma. When you come in for your appointment, Dr. Kim will be able to provide you with an accurate diagnosis; however, some common signs that may indicate a root canal is needed include:

  • Persistent tooth pain, especially when chewing or applying pressure
  • Prolonged tooth sensitivity to hot or cold
  • Swelling or tenderness in the gums near the affected tooth
  • Darkening or discoloration of the tooth

The Root Canal Process

The root canal process is surprisingly straightforward, and it will not cause you any outright pain (despite what you might have seen in movies or on TV). After thoroughly numbing the area, Dr. Kim will create a tiny opening in the tooth and go in to gently remove the infected or damaged pulp from inside. The space is then carefully cleaned, disinfected, and sealed to prevent further infection, and it’ll be filled with a biocompatible material to help the tooth retain its structure. In many cases, a custom-made dental crown is placed on top to further strengthen and protect the tooth, also granting it full functionality.

The Benefits of Getting a Root Canal

Getting a root canal offers several important benefits, starting with the ability to save your natural tooth, which is always going to be preferable to having it removed. Plus, unlike with an extraction, a root canal allows you to maintain your normal bite and chewing function without needing a replacement. It also helps to prevent the spread of infection to nearby teeth and tissues, protecting your overall oral health. Best of all, modern root canal treatment is highly effective at bringing relief from lasting pain, allowing you to smile, eat, and speak with confidence again!
